Why Being Together Helps You Focus: Body Doubling and Using Online Studios

What is body doubling?

You may have noticed that you somehow focus better at a library or study cafe than at home. This is commonly called body doubling. Simply knowing that someone nearby is working on their own task makes it easier to start and means you wander off less.

The term became known as it was often discussed as a way to help people with attention difficulties get started on work. However, it is hard to say the effect is the same for everyone, and how much you feel it varies from person to person. This article is not a summary of research. It is a practical write-up of an approach many writers share from their own experience.

Why it matters especially for writers who work alone

Most web novel and webtoon creators work alone at home. There is no commute, no colleague watching the deadline, and the line between rest and work is blurry. In this kind of environment, starting is the biggest barrier.

When someone is working at the same time, you feel a light pressure of "I'm the only one slacking," and also the relief of "I'm not the only one struggling." These two things help you start.

How to use body doubling online

  • Video call: keep cameras on and work separately. The effect is strong, but your face and work screen are exposed
  • Voice channel: join with your microphone off. There may be noise
  • Online studio: you only see each other's timer status and whether people are online. No camera or microphone is needed, so it is low pressure
  • Check-in chat: leave one line when you start ("Starting now") and when you finish ("Did two sessions")

Tips for getting more out of working together

  1. Decide today's goal in one line before you start. Without a goal you just end up sitting there even in company.
  2. Keep conversation to a minimum during focus time. Talk during breaks.
  3. Make a room you visit regularly at fixed times. Seeing the same people at the same time makes it easier to form a habit.
  4. Say a short goodbye when you finish. Having an ending leaves a sense of accomplishment.

Things to watch out for

For some people, being together actually gets in the way. If you start comparing yourself with other people's pace, the pressure can feel heavy. When that happens, change your standard so you compare with yesterday's you, not with the other person's record.

Body doubling is also only a tool for starting. It does not guarantee the quality of your writing. In an environment where you can focus, what you write is still up to you.

Try it yourself: your first hour working together

The effect of being together differs from person to person. Try it two or three times, note the results, and pick the style that helps you (a quiet room, a room where you can talk, a short session).

  1. Choose a place to work together (an online studio, a study cafe, etc.) and a time.
  2. Before you start, write the goal for this hour in one line.
  3. Do two sessions of 25 minutes focus + 5 minutes rest, without talking during focus time.
  4. Afterward, record how much of the goal you reached and compare it with when you worked alone.
